L is for the way you look at me...

Welcome to Day 2 of Valentine Lovelies!

I made this LOVE decoration for my coffee table with frames, paint and chalk markers!
I took the glass out of the frames and painted them red with the Folk Art Multi-Surface acrylic paint which took about 3 coats.  I put them back into the frame with the paint side inward so that it wouldn't scratch.  I then used the chalk markers to write "love" on the glass and to add some decorations!
I think this is cute and could be used at different times of the year, i.e. Christmas, New Year's Eve, 4th of July...with different sayings of course!
My other option was going to be to use velcro to attach these letters to the glass.  I think this would be cute too, but the chalk markers were so much easier!

Stay tuned for more Valentine Lovelies tomorrow!

Wishing you big waves and an artful day!

Red, White and Blue I Love You!

I made this red, white and blue flag out of scraps to hang outside for the summer. Summer holidays are all about patriotism and I just love a good flag waving tradition!
I wanted it to be rustic and tattered so I tore all the red and white strips from my scrap bag. A scrap using project is always good for me, I love the fact it was gonna be trash and I rescued it!
I am also a collector of yardsticks and rulers, so I made a sleeve to hang it just big enough for a piece of a yard stick.   You could use a dowel or even twine fed through the sleeve.  I had assistance from Mr. Nini for attaching it semi permanently to our porch railing.

I attached the fabric strips by putting a wide hem in the blue fabric's opposite end and cut slits in it, fed them from the back, tied a big knot in the top on the front side to give it that rustic look I like so much!!
It's perfect to leave out all summer long and it can be thrown out when it's faded and worn. It took no more than an hour to make and cost nothing!

Happy Summer and Happy Independence Day!! Go make something!

The Red Scarf Project

Here at Nini and The Sea we love to give back!  Whether it be through an art project or monetarily, we always try to help someone out in any way we can.  This fall we are once again donating to Foster Care To Success through The Red Scarf Project!

Foster Care To Success is the oldest and largest nonprofit that works directly with college bound foster care children.  They offer not only tuition help to these students but also a text book fund, help with living expenses, and an emergency fund.

Every year Foster Care To Success promotes The Red Scarf Project in which scarves are knitted or crocheted in red yarn and placed in care packages.  These packages are delivered on Valentine's Day and become valuable items that students can use year after year!  Last year I made this ridiculously bright red scarf for the project:

This year I knitted this slightly less obnoxious scarf:
This was the first time I attempted to knit a cable scarf and I'm so happy with how it came out!  I found the pattern on Ravelry and it turned out to be free! You can find the pattern here.  So easy, I can't believe I avoided cable stitch for so long!

If you would like to make a scarf to donate to The Red Scarf Project, click here for more details.  If you don't knit or crochet, you can make a monetary donation to Foster Care To Success here

I love encouraging and supporting people who are working hard to get an education and Foster Care To Success does just that!

Wishing you big waves and an artful day!
