Atlantic City, NJ hosted the World Championship of Sand Sculpting this year so we decided to go take a peak at what the master sand sculptors were up to. It is amazing what can be sculpted out of a pile of sand! Some of the sculptors were really friendly, some were very quiet so no secrets were given away. There are different contests within the championship, there are teams and solo sculptors that compete throughout the two weeks of the contest. It was really interesting to see how they build the foundations using a round rubber form or rigid wooden forms filled with sand and water constantly running out a diffuser on a hose. They used full size shovels, buckets and any of their own hand tools they brought with them.
The sculptures withstand a lot of weather, and AC had a LOT of rainy stormy weather the first week of the championship so there were a few smaller sculptures that were starting to crumble. They spray them with a mixture of Elmer's glue and water when they're all done to keep the wind and rain erosion from destroying them too quickly, they can last up to 6 weeks with gentler weather. The Littles liked looking at the sculptures, and wanted to learn more about building their own sand castles but there weren't any clinics while we were there. There was a pile of sand toys and sand for you to try your hand at sculpting and C3 was more than happy to give it a try!
I think their favorite part of the trip was playing in the waves of the Atlantic! Atlantic City beaches are beautiful, safe and clean. We ate lunch at Rainforest Cafe and ended our trip checking out the water show at the The Pier Shops at Caesars. We really had a good time....that's how we DO AC!
Happy Summer!
